I think the reason Jesus didn't pray Matthew 6 in the garden is because Matthew 6:9-13 is not a prayer itself but a set of instructions for prayer.
Yes, Jesus. And *lucky* for us, God said no to Jesus. But my prayer confusion is also why I mostly end up with the words Jesus himself taught us. They are pretty amazing (even if I DO wonder why we don't have record of Jesus praying these words in the garden....I'M SO CONFUSED!!! ha!).

But yay for all the times God speaks right into our days and lives and we're left floored by that. : )

Caryn, clearly articulated. Thanks for writing about this. This is one of the biggest wrestlings I have with God... Why does he ask me to pray if he's going to do what is best anyway? Or is something else going on? Or do we simply punt it to "prayer doesn't change things, prayer changes me"? Even Jesus experienced an ungranted prayer.

I wrote along a similar theme a few years ago that may add to the conversation. http://www.soulation.org/sturdyanswers/fledge-the-problem-of-prayer/

Annie Dillard speaks of these problems of providence (which is really a "problem of evil") not as "issues" but as "mysteries."

Prayer's a tough one, Caryn. The Bible talks a lot about prayer, but never really tells us how it works. All I can do is trust that whatever I happen to pray, the Holy Spirit is making sense of it for me. I'd like him to make sense of it to me as well, but Jesus didn't say we'd get that type of uinderstanding. He did say we'd get comfort from the Spirit, though, since he's the Comforter.

But prayer's still a tough one for me.

Blessings,
Tim
