What a great perspective switch, from mental flagellation to looking for support. Reminds me of Psalm 123:2 “Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, So our eyes look to the LORD our God, Until He is gracious to us.”

Great image that this looking up helps us unclench our fingers from strings… of another corset. So vivid a picture. Makes me want to paint it!

I liked the part in your book “Ruby Slippers” about corsets because it helped me understand better the verse “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” I had always wondered about that, but for me it has helped because when things seem really tough I know I don’t need to mentally flagellate myself, but instead look for the support I need in God and perhaps spot something I’m holding on to that I should let go of – often that ends up being the tightly held strings to yet another corset that was keeping me from being what I was created to be – keeping me from just seeing what God wants for me, instead of what all the different voices in the world try to tell me He wants for me. I appreciate conventional wisdom, standards, etc., but when they become more important than being able to hear what God’s trying to tell me, then they’re a corset.
