I think I've discussed my dirty laundry, um corsets, plenty on your blog, but I just wanted to tell you that I share your joy in the testimony your reader sent in. It is a hallowed thing to have a role in such a transformation :).

Yes, it's such powerful imagery of how we view God.

Thanks for the book recommendations - i love Nouwen but have not read that one and it was just recommended to me last night by someone else! I've heard about the ragamuffin gospel too, will look into it, thanks.

Mandy,

What a great perspective switch, from mental flagellation to looking for support. Reminds me of Psalm 123:2 "Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, So our eyes look to the LORD our God, Until He is gracious to us."

Great image that this looking up helps us unclench our fingers from strings... of another corset. So vivid a picture. Makes me want to paint it!

I liked the part in your book "Ruby Slippers" about corsets because it helped me understand better the verse "My yoke is easy and my burden is light." I had always wondered about that, but for me it has helped because when things seem really tough I know I don't need to mentally flagellate myself, but instead look for the support I need in God and perhaps spot something I'm holding on to that I should let go of - often that ends up being the tightly held strings to yet another corset that was keeping me from being what I was created to be - keeping me from just seeing what God wants for me, instead of what all the different voices in the world try to tell me He wants for me. I appreciate conventional wisdom, standards, etc., but when they become more important than being able to hear what God's trying to tell me, then they're a corset.

AI,

I also wanted to know the why of everything... talking through scripture, or just Biblical ideas really helped me, too.

Thank you for this.

Have you seen our "<a href="http://www.myfaithhurdle.org" rel="nofollow">my faith hurdle</a>" blog at Soulation? I think you'd like it, and Dale's mini-blog <a href="http://www.soulation.org/livingwithquestions/" rel="nofollow">Living with Questions</a>.
