Jennifer,

I completely agree. We can start in small ways, learning about things we care about. I wish organizations like MOPS could hear you in this comment!

Let me know if I can be a resource for you in exploring any questions you care to learn more about.

My husband's book Living with Questions is, I believe, the best primer for learning about basic question and answers that stand up before any audience.

Anastasia,

To this kind encouragement I say, here here. We must not expect all things in all seasons.

And yet, I know ALL mothers find time to do things they value... whether that's making homemade bread, shuttling kids to games, reading Kierkegaard, studying the Trinity, swimming lessons or writing a novel. None of these are necessary, but each of us find that the unnecessary things can often be the essential ways we're equipped to love being alive, these unnecessary things can give us life and sparkle in our eyes.

So I say, Raise your glass to winnowing down the areas that drive you to smile when you study them, do them, understand them. We need more mothers freed to be themselves AS they mother.

And as an apologist, I believe every one of us has questions about our faith that can keep us up at night. That's where we can begin.

Just a little observation. While I completely agree with staying sharp during child rearing, also don't worry too much about it. To everything there is a season and for some that means holding off on the hard questions for a while. Eventually you'll have the time and energy to return to them. You CAN have it all, but sometimes not all at once.

I so agree with you! Mom literature tends to be the same old thing. I'm not saying we don't need ideas in, for example, how to get my kids to be kind to each other. But if that's all I'm concerned about, there is a problem.

Why not talk about doctrine so that a mother can actually teach her children why they believe what they do. It's more than just "that's the way we've always believed." Or even worse, "They'll learn about this stuff at church."

It is my job as their mother to teach them why we believe that Jesus is God (that's just one example). And as we delve more into this arena and as they grow older, we can teach them more about what the cults teach so they won't be blindsided.

All of this takes work and unfortunately, many mothers are just glad that they made it through the day in one piece. I am not being critical. I have three children and I know how exhausting it can be. But we must see the bigger picture and if we take it in baby steps, we will accomplish much.

I love this post, by the way! I'm going to look up some of those books.
