About

Are you curious if faith, feminism and Christian womanhood can intersect? You've found the crossroads. Ruby Slippers is the sparkly nexus of femininity, spirituality and sexual renewal.

I'm the early wife, later mother who writes about the real possibility of following Jesus as a bold female in this century. If you're another curious cat about strong women who are also sexy, emotional, intelligent, strong and Christian, read on.

Mercy for Christmas

December 14th, 2011 by Jonalyn

As a young girl I played “Mercy” with other friends. The wrist-bending game where the loser had to shout, “Mercy.” The word that meant punishment would end, the word that was embarrassing to yell. Dale and I watched an episode of Midsomer Murders last weekend. The kind vicar with the bitchy wife was the murderer.  Several [...]

What Corset Will You Wear This Holiday?

November 23rd, 2011 by Jonalyn

I used to love them, their hourglass shape. But corsets and I have a longish history of ambivalence. Their point is to re-shape, re-curve, re-move. As if our natural shape isn’t good enough.  In “Femininity Beyond Fairy Tales” (from the introduction of Ruby Slippers) I make a list of the corsets we wear: the invulnerable athlete, [...]

Deaths of Playboys, Lives of Husbands

November 16th, 2011 by Jonalyn

Gunter Sachs with Brigitte Bardot   – 1967  -  Jean-Pierre Bonnotte/Gamma/Gamma-Rapho via Getty Images I picked up the Wall Street Journal article “Death of the Playboy“ and learned that this author, Steve Garbarino was bemoaning their disappearance.  The independently wealthy, smooth, womanizing playboys of yesteryear can be seen with topless models playing chess, in sports cars [...]

Making the Bed in the Dark

November 9th, 2011 by Jonalyn

I’m reading Meet the Austins by Madeleine L’Engle, some post-therapy work since I graduated from therapy last week. My therapist recommended I read this young adult novel to get acquainted with a very full, very honest, very healthy family.  They are delightful, perfectly zippy, and heart-warming. So far the parents disagree in front of the [...]

Theology, essays, sexperts and novels on my nightstand

October 12th, 2011 by Jonalyn

I’ve come across some books you need to know about, places my soul stopped, places others who want to walk into more freedom will find some refreshing water. These titles were not sent to me seeking endorsement; I didn’t get them for free. Rather, I bought to pore over them. Each deserve a full post [...]

Ruby Slippers: the sparkling connection between, faith, feminism and Christian womanhood

October 5th, 2011 by Jonalyn

Have you read the Grimm story about a girl who slept in the cinders, but ends up a princess?  The Grimm version has this horrible bloody bit about stepsisters, knives and feet. Determined to make the prince their man, and pitting themselves against each other, they carve out slices of their toe or heel to [...]

Co-Parenting – a Bag of Tips and Tricks

September 21st, 2011 by Jonalyn

I just finished The Paris Wifeby Paula McLain, a book swirling with the roles of men and women, Ernest Hemingway and Hadley Richardson respectively.  Hadley sacrifices for Ernest’s career, finding excitement and purpose unmatched by any of her prospects in his life. They move to Paris.  Not until Hadley becomes pregnant can she find a [...]
