Ashley Judd Gets it Right

April 11th, 2012 by Jonalyn

“The only thing that matters is how I feel about myself, my personal integrity, and my relationship with my Creator.” –Ashley Judd Ashley Judd recently wrote, “Patriarchy is not men.  Patriarchy is a system in which both women and men participate.” I could not agree more. Patriarchy is held in place at least partially by women. [...]

Who do I look like? Listening to The Hunger Games

March 28th, 2012 by Jonalyn

My mom hung a little cream placard with blue letters in our kitchen. Growing up I’d read it often, “You are who you are when no one is looking.” It plagued me with confusion about who I really was.  The me in private? or the me in public? In the movie, Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen [...]

New Year Wantings & Co-Parenting Safely Through Rapids

January 11th, 2012 by Jonalyn

Dale doesn’t think new year resolutions are all they’re cracked up to be. I tend to disagree, mainly because I’m a lover of opportunities to change in grandiose ways, ways I can write about and check up on. Dale is a changer in bits and pieces, he’s also big on changing when the need arises. [...]

Determined to make the prince their man, and pitting themselves against each other, they carve out slices of their toe or heel to [...]

Thighs this Summer and Curly Girls

July 22nd, 2011 by Jonalyn

I cut off an old pair of horse-riding jeans this morning.  They’re short, even shorter when I roll them. Yikes! I checked out my short shorts (and post-momma legs) in our mirror. My legs, in the back, look like someone else’s legs.  Not quite firm, not quite smooth, not quite tan. I’m sort of concerned. [...]

Pridometer – what is pride?

June 9th, 2011 by Jonalyn

Pride is a chameleon. You think you’re avoiding the vice, when lo, and behold you’ve transmogrified into Pride’s Poster Child. Martyr’s Pride Last week on our flight from London to Chicago.  Dale had his noise canceling ear plugs in to watch Beastly. Must be nice. Finn was restless. Later we found he had two ear infections. [...]

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother – Virtuous? Successful? Humble?

February 15th, 2011 by Jonalyn

There exist a group of people who hunt out the most difficult task because they believe it is the virtuous task. Amy Chua, the woman who recommends a relentless, driving style of parenting is one of these, she recommends her parenting because it has been the hardest thing she’s ever done. She reminds me of [...]
