Making the Bed in the Dark

November 9th, 2011 by Jonalyn

I’m reading Meet the Austins by Madeleine L’Engle, some post-therapy work since I graduated from therapy last week. My therapist recommended I read this young adult novel to get acquainted with a very full, very honest, very healthy family.  They are delightful, perfectly zippy, and heart-warming. So far the parents disagree in front of the [...]

They move to Paris.  Not until Hadley becomes pregnant can she find a [...]

Practicing Sabbath – Tips for the practice

August 24th, 2011 by Jonalyn

I don’t know much about you, but I can guess that you need one thing right now. You need rest. The Bible called that one way before we were around. The first thing God called holy wasn’t a person or an animal, it wasn’t a star or a plant; it was a day, a wedge [...]

There is a silent epidemic among the men we know and love. For every six men, one has been sexually abused. Why read a book on men and sexual abuse?  To put it simply and confidentially, I know men who have been sexually abused. I want to understand them and love them better. I’ve pored over [...]

Golden Hands and Exotic Poles

March 2nd, 2011 by Jonalyn

Being a little more than a quarter Hispanic, given the multi-ethnic look of so many models, it’s be easy to assume that it’s the Mexican blood that has the potential to make me exotic. But, if exotic means strikingly unusual, then the most unusual bit of me isn’t Mexican, it’s Polish. My short grandmother is [...]

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother – Virtuous? Successful? Humble?

February 15th, 2011 by Jonalyn

There exist a group of people who hunt out the most difficult task because they believe it is the virtuous task. Amy Chua, the woman who recommends a relentless, driving style of parenting is one of these, she recommends her parenting because it has been the hardest thing she’s ever done. She reminds me of [...]

Family, Crisis and Beautiful Wings

December 15th, 2010 by Jonalyn

I just sat down with a toasted everything bagel and raspberry hot tea. It’s my special morning time (happens only a few times a week) to write. In the last post I promised to write about family and crisis, how the week before Thanksgiving I got a call from Dale that my dad’s ATV had [...]
