About

I'm the early wife, later mother who writes about the real possibility of following Jesus as a bold female in this century. If you're another curious cat about strong women who are also sexy, emotional, intelligent, strong and Christian, read on.

Rich Ladies: When Women Back a Man’s Ministry

March 14th, 2012 by Jonalyn

I know men who proclaim in Sunday services words sharpened by a one-woman audience at home.  Pastors around the country, relying on the women in their lives to help them. Personally, I count it a good thing when a man relies on a woman. I’m toe-deep in a book on this The Resignation of Eve: [...]

What does Feminism Mean to You?

February 16th, 2012 by Jonalyn

I was 19 years old at the University of Virginia and suffering. I had enrolled in Women in American Literature and felt instantly intimidated by the strong, articulate and (to my mind) ANGRY feminists (was their a more vitriolic combination?) sitting beside me. I was so freaked out I ask the professor to let me [...]

What Corset Will You Wear This Holiday?

November 23rd, 2011 by Jonalyn

I used to love them, their hourglass shape. But corsets and I have a longish history of ambivalence. Their point is to re-shape, re-curve, re-move. As if our natural shape isn’t good enough.  In “Femininity Beyond Fairy Tales” (from the introduction of Ruby Slippers) I make a list of the corsets we wear: the invulnerable athlete, [...]

Ruby Slippers: the sparkling connection between, faith, feminism and Christian womanhood

October 5th, 2011 by Jonalyn

Have you read the Grimm story about a girl who slept in the cinders, but ends up a princess?  The Grimm version has this horrible bloody bit about stepsisters, knives and feet. Determined to make the prince their man, and pitting themselves against each other, they carve out slices of their toe or heel to [...]

“You’re Only a Woman”: Spiritual Abuse and the Independent Fundamental Baptists

April 14th, 2011 by Jonalyn

The father is the hammer. The mother is the chisel. The child is the stone (please note changes from email). I don’t receive theology from a woman. When Eve gave Adam theology, the whole word got damned to hell. The Bible says man is the head of the wife. The Bible was written by men. [...]

Interviews on Writing, Speaking and Controversy

December 3rd, 2010 by Jonalyn

Most of my friends, the longtime ones, would tell you that my plans as a young woman don’t look like my life today. I didn’t want to go to college, instead I wanted to be married fairly young. I wanted to teach at a public high school until I got pregnant.  I wanted to have twelve–yes [...]

Caster Semenya- Let Me Be a Woman

September 14th, 2009 by Jonalyn

I’ve noticed the unhelpful, speculative chatter about Caster Semenya, enough that I wanted to share a few thoughts I’ve written elsewhere (Ruby Slippers) and give followers of Jesus a moment to pause. Especially in light of confusing posts such as “Do all Hermaphrodites Automatically God to Hell?” The short version of Ms. Semenya’s story: her [...]
